One of the biggest challenges was emulating the Nintendo GameCube’s old but powerful MPU (microprocessor) on the Switch’s customised processor: a number of optimisation tricks were needed to get the game to run at full speed. NERD’s own Nintendo GameCube emulation technology was used in Super Mario 3D All-Stars to bring Super Mario Sunshine to Nintendo Switch. It's a short read, and you can find the original post here, but here's what was said in full: Specifically, this latest update focuses on Sunshine, outlining the technical challenges of emulating GameCube games on Switch. Including emulated versions of Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, many of you will know that 3D All-Stars is being delisted next week, but – though it admittedly flew under the radar at first – before that occurs, NERD has given us more details about how they got it running on Switch.

Having created emulators for the NES and SNES Classic Editions, and downloadable Wii/ DS games on the Wii, NERD recently helped out with Super Mario 3D All-Stars, too.

  • Get overpowered hardware to cope with running the software.You may not know the Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD) by name, but you'll certainly be familiar with its work.
  • Repeat the dolphin setting optimization for that build.
  • Try another fork or unstable build of dolphin.
  • Game Config: Speed up disc transfer rate.
  • If using DSP, use this guide to dump DSP files with a Homebrew-enabled Wii (if you have a Wii, that is).
  • DSP Emulator engine to DSP HLE Emulation (fast, but you may encounter audio glitches, if so, you may want to switch to DSP LLE Recompiler which is slower but more accurate).
  • Reduce detail in your graphics card settings to improve performance.
  • Fast Depth Calculation (may cause flickering textures, try on and off).
  • OpenMP Texture Decoder (in rare instances it can "max out all cores" and hurt more than it helps).
  • Disable Destination Alpha (may crash, try and on and off).
  • Cache Display List (may crash, try and on and off).
  • Set CPU Emulator Engine to JIT or JITL (if latter may has issues, use JIT.
